Verity JE — Install & API Key Guide

"Verity JE" and "verity je mod" both point to the same thing: VarmiteYT's Java Edition mod, the one with explicit permission from ThatMob. Its CurseForge listing covers the file — this page covers what it doesn't: the Groq API key setup, the current NeoForge bug, and where people actually get stuck.

⚠️ This page is an independent guide and is not affiliated with Mojang, Microsoft, ThatMob, VarmiteYT, or Groq. We link out to official pages for downloads and account setup — we don't host any files or collect API keys ourselves. Verified against the mod's CurseForge listing in mid-July 2026.

What is Verity JE?

Verity JE is a Minecraft Java Edition mod by VarmiteYT, published on CurseForge. Its own listing states it's an official adaptation created with explicit permission and a contractual agreement from ThatMob, the creator of the original viral Verity videos — which gives it clearer provenance than most other Verity-named projects. It adds an AI-driven companion whose responses are generated through Groq's API rather than pre-scripted lines.

Downloads have grown fast: from roughly 600K in early July 2026 to over 1.6 million by July 19 — among the quickest-growing of any Verity project right now.

⚠ NeoForge build currently has known bugs

Verity JE ships two branches: Forge 1.20.1 and NeoForge 1.21.1. As of this writing, the mod's own CurseForge listing flags the NeoForge 1.21.1 build as deprecated with multiple known bugs. Unless something specific requires NeoForge, install the Forge 1.20.1 build instead — it's the actively maintained, stable option.

How to install Verity JE (Forge)

  1. Install Minecraft Forge for 1.20.1 from Forge's official site if you haven't already.
  2. Download the latest Forge 1.20.1 .jar release of Verity JE from its CurseForge files page — not a source code archive, and not a NeoForge file.
  3. Drop the .jar into your Forge mods folder.
  4. Launch Minecraft using the Forge 1.20.1 profile, and confirm the mod appears in your Mods list before continuing.
  5. Follow the in-game or config-file prompt to enter your Groq API key (see below) — without it, Verity won't be able to generate responses.

Setting up your Groq API key

Verity JE's AI responses run through Groq, not a key baked into the mod, so each player needs their own free key:

🔑 Getting your key

  • Go to console.groq.com and create a free account — this is Groq's own official console, not a third-party site.
  • Open the API Keys section and generate a new key.
  • Copy the key and paste it into Verity JE's setup step, following the instructions on the mod's own CurseForge description or included readme.
  • Never paste your Groq API key into any site other than Groq's own console, and don't share it publicly — treat it like a password.

Common problems people hit

"I don't have an API key" / setup prompt won't go away

This means the mod hasn't received a valid Groq key yet. Double-check you copied the full key with no extra spaces, and that you followed the exact config step listed on the mod's CurseForge page — the setup location can shift slightly between versions.

Mod doesn't appear after installing

Usually means Forge itself isn't installed correctly, or you launched the wrong profile. Confirm you're running the Forge 1.20.1 profile specifically, not vanilla or a different loader.

Crashes or errors on the NeoForge build

Expected right now — see the warning above. Switch to the Forge 1.20.1 build rather than troubleshooting NeoForge-specific crashes.

Verity doesn't respond in-game

Usually an API key or network issue rather than a mod bug — verify your key is active in the Groq console, and that nothing (firewall, VPN) is blocking outbound requests.

Is it safe to use?

Verity JE sends your in-game chat input to Groq's API to generate responses — that's inherent to how it works, not a red flag by itself, but worth knowing if privacy matters to you. If you'd rather avoid any external API calls entirely, PKFL's Java mod uses pre-scripted responses instead, or you can skip installing anything and use our browser-based chat simulator, which keeps everything local to your device.
